Minneriya![]() Minneriya is a small city in the North Central Plains of Sri Lanka. It is closer to Pollonnaruwa. 182Km away from Colombo. Minneriya is famous for two things. The great Minneriya Tank. and the Minneriya National Park. * Minneriya Tank - The Minneriya tank was built by the Great King Mahasen who ruled Sri Lanka in the period from 275 to 301AD. He started the construction of large tanks in Sri Lanka, and built sixteen such tanks. Minneriya is one of those great tanks. Today this tank has been a support for a large no of Wild life around and home to 26 species of Fish. The main sources of water for the tank are a diversion of Amban River and Elahera canal. * Minneriya National Park - Minneriya National park is a home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. There are nine species of amphibians, 24 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish (three of which are endangered), 75 species of butterflies and 160 species of birds. The principal attraction of the park is elephants; they can be found roaming the park in large herds at any time of the year also the park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. Other mammals found in the park include sambar deer, spotted deer, sloth bears and leopards. The Park is in a 8890 acre area. The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997.
